We follow a shy antelope through the forest, its red colouring standing out against the green undergrowth.
The sky was dark and threatening rain, so this afternoon we headed for the cover of the Mtunzini coastal forest on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.
With only two hours or so of light left, narrow pathways led us through the dune bush where the vegetation was dense and our eyes strained to see anything in the thick undergrowth.
Suddenly our guide stopped, signalling that there was something nearby.
Behind the tangled vines we saw a red shape moving. We followed it through the trees, and it turned out to be a timid red duiker, also known as the Natal duiker or the red forest duiker.
Red duikers are tiny antelopes that are usually solitary, though you might spot a pair or even three of them if you’re really lucky.
As we filmed this one, its tail and mouth never stopped moving.
