HD/SD, what's the difference?

Earth-Touch videos come in two formats: standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD). These terms refer to the resolution of the video. SD has a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. This works well online, on your iPod or on regular TV screens. HD has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The higher the resolution, the clearer the video and the crisper the detail. HD looks best on big plasma and LCD screens.

A great grey owl, on the lookout for food from its lofty perch, has no success and flies off into the forest.

Today I was at Tower Falls, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, where the Tower Creek plunges over 40m (130ft) into the Yellowstone River below. The spires which flank the head of the falls give them their name. The geology of this area reflects its volcanic origins and the ever-present sulphur odour attests to continued volcanic activity. It is an awesome and otherworldly place.

As I passed a ranger parked at the side of the road, I looked in the direction he was facing and spotted a great grey owl back in the trees.

The great grey owl (Strix nebulosa) sometimes called the ‘great ghost’, is North America’s largest owl. It can reach 76cm (30in) in length, with a wingspan of 152cm (60in). However its size is deceptive and is mostly due to its dense plumage. At 700 to 1800g (1.5 to 4lb), it weighs less than many other species of owl. It is largely nocturnal, but is known to hunt also at dawn and dusk, and sometimes during the day.

Owls have acute hearing and eyesight and can swivel their heads to cover a wide range of territory. This bird appeared to be on the lookout for a snack. He moved to a second perch but finally gave up and flew into the forest.
