A bachelor herd of elephants had gathered on the fringe of a forest. There is a hierarchy within these herds and it is usually the older, bigger bulls that are more dominant.
There was one middle-aged elephant bull (Loxodonta africana) that started pushing the younger bulls around to assert himself. As soon as one younger bull turned its rear towards him to indicate submission, he would immediately go in search of another young elephant to intimidate.
It was only when a much older and bigger bull approached him that he calmed down and left the others in peace.
This energy spilled over to two older bulls that engaged in similar challenging behaviour, although their confrontation was much more playful and relaxed.
