Further inland we crossed a small stream running down to the beach through the snow covered tussock grass. Here we made our first acquaintance with Southern elephant seals.
The Southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) were completely relaxed with us and watched us with enormous round liquid eyes. Some were moulting, some were watching us but most were in a very deep sleep.
