HD/SD, what's the difference?

Earth-Touch videos come in two formats: standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD). These terms refer to the resolution of the video. SD has a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. This works well online, on your iPod or on regular TV screens. HD has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. The higher the resolution, the clearer the video and the crisper the detail. HD looks best on big plasma and LCD screens.

We also have two audio options: ambient and commentary. Ambient is the natural soundtrack provided by the animals and environment while filming. Commentary is a voice-over about the footage you are viewing.

As the sea water becomes greener and sediment swirls, a confident predator patrols the reef.

Today we headed out on a glassy, flat sea, in search of great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias).

We went in the direction of the small town of Arniston, a small seaside village here in the Western Cape, South Africa. The local fishermen had told us of a few small reefs where we might find these predators.

We dived in and as time passed the water colour changed from blue to greenish, while the tide dropped and the small swell kicked up sediment.

Suddenly, the unmistakable snout of a great white shark appeared and its dorsal fin sliced the surface. Confidently she swam up to us, observing us with her black eyes.

She circled us twice, then disappeared into the green curtain. We thought she had left and we were about to get out when again she appeared, giving us the beady eye and swimming in a relaxed and confident manner.

This continued for about an hour, and as each minute passed the water got greener.

Finally she appeared right below us and neither of us had seen her approach.

On the boat, the skipper said that the shark had never left us in all the time that we had been unable to see her.
