Duration: 01:52Earth-Touch videos come in two formats: standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD). These terms refer to the resolution of the video. SD has a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. This works well online, on your iPod or on regular TV screens. HD has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. The higher the resolution, the clearer the video and the crisper the detail. HD looks best on big plasma and LCD screens.
We also have two audio options: ambient and commentary. Ambient is the natural soundtrack provided by the animals and environment while filming. Commentary is a voice-over about the footage you are viewing.
A nocturnal frog, owl and spiders spend the day in their canyon refuges.
The day began in the shadows of the Drakensberg range of mountains, at the northern edge of the Blyde Canyon in Mpumalanga province, South Africa.
Morning mist lingered on the cliff faces.
Our first discovery was a grey-backed tree frog, a small nocturnal creature that sleeps the day away, camouflaged against whatever surface it finds itself on.
Like a chameleon, this frog can change colour to match its immediate environment.
Our next point of interest was the nest of a species of ‘social’ spider. These small arachnids too are nocturnal – active during the hours of darkness, when hundreds of them emerge from the communal nest.
As we made our way down into the riverine forest that borders the banks of the Blyde River we found another nocturnal creature, this time an African wood owl (Strix woodfordii) fluffed away in the uppermost branches of a giant quinine tree, where it will sleep the day away.
